Located in North Dakota, Traill County has a total land area of about 863 sq. miles, one square mile of its total area is water. Traill County’s largest city is Mayville and its county seat is Hillsboro. Also located in Traill County is the Traill County Courthouse. A magnificent structure, surrounded by a sweeping, green lawn. As of 2006, the population in Traill County is 8,178.

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,477 people, 3,341 households, and 2,231 families residing in the county. The population density was 10 persons per square mile (4/km²). There were 3,708 housing units at an average density of 4 per square mile (2/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 97.31% White, 0.11% Black or African American, 0.94% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.96% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 2.18% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. 58.9% were of Norwegian and 20.6% German ancestry according to Census 2000.

The median income for a household in the county was $37,445, and the median income for a family was $45,852. Males had a median income of $30,138 versus $20,583 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,014. About 6.4% of families and 9.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 9.6% of those under age 18 and 8.1% of those aged 65 or over.

Last April 8th this year (2008), Traill County voters went to the polls to decide whether to build a new county office building and jail complex. The proposed $7 million “Trail County Courthouse Project” is a new county office building and law enforcement center which would be connected to the existing county courthouse. Besides the social services and law enforcement center, this new building would also house a new country commission chamber, a large meeting room for both county and public use and offices for the state attorney and the county water board.

Its townships include Belmont, Bingham, Blanchard, Bloomfield, Bohnsack, Buxton, Caledonia, Eldorado, Elm River, Ervin, Galesburg, Garfield, Greenfield, Herberg, Hillsboro, Kelso, Lindaas, Mayville, Morgan, Norman, Norway, Roseville, Stavanger, Viking, and Vold. Nearby counties include Grand Forks County, Polk County, Norman County, Minnesota, Cass County and Steele County.
